Email Attachments May Not Be Searchable In Laserfiche 9 When Imported Using Both The "Generate searchable text" and "Leave In Message" Options.

Laserfiche 9

Summary

When you drag and drop an email message into Laserfiche, the Laserfiche Full-Text Search Engine may not index the attachment. See the following scenario.

  • The 32-bit version of Microsoft Outlook is installed on a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or later.
  • You drag and drop an email from Outlook to Laserfiche.
  • In the Import to Laserfiche dialog box, you enable the generate searchable text option and choose to leave the attachment in the message.
  • When you open the imported message with the Document Viewer and view associated text, you only see text from the email message itself.
  • Document text search results will not include the imported document if you search for a phrase that is in the attachment.

Workaround 1

During the import process, do not enable the Generate searchable text option in the Import to Laserfiche dialog box. While the imported Laserfiche document will not contain associated text that you can view in the Document Viewer, the Laserfiche Full-Text Search engine will index both the email message and its attachment and document text searches will find both the email and its attachment text.

Workaround 2

Use the Windows Registry Editor to configure the Laserfiche Client to use IFilters instead of the Outlook API. Browse to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Laserfiche\Client8\Profile\Options registry key and add an IFilterFlags string value.

Warning: Incorrectly editing the registry may adversely affect your system. Before you edit the registry, make sure you have a backup and understand how to restore it if a problem occurs.

  1. Load the Windows Registry Editor.
  2. Expand HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
  3. Expand SOFTWARE.
  4. Expand Laserfiche.
  5. Expand Client8.
  6. Expand Profile.
  7. Select Options.
  8. From the Edit menu, point to New, and select String Value.
  9. Name the new string value:

    IFilterFlags

  10. Set the value to 2 to configure the Laserfiche Client to always use IFilters.
