Laserfiche 8.3, Laserfiche 9, Laserfiche 10, Laserfiche 11

Summary

Laserfiche cannot generate page images for dynamic XFA form PDF files. Attempting to generate image pages from a dynamic XFA form creates a single page with an error message indicating that the page contains temporary data. The page may look similar to the following message:

    Please wait...

If this message is not eventually replaced by the proper contents of the document, your PDF viewer may not be able to display this type of document.

Workaround

Retain the original PDF file while importing to Laserfiche and use the Snapshot printer to create image pages for the XFA form. You can then OCR the image pages to extract text.

To configure Laserfiche to retain the original PDF file when importing and to use the Snapshot virtual printer on PDF files

  1. Configure Laserfiche to keep the original PDF file during import:
    1. In the Laserfiche Client, from the Tools menu, click Options.
    2. In the Options dialog box, click New Documents and select the Settings item.
    3. Make sure the Keep original PDF files option is selected.
  2. Configure Laserfiche to use the Snapshot virtual printer when processing PDF files:
    1. In the Laserfiche Client, from the Tools menu, click Options.
    2. In the Options dialog box, click Generate Pages.
    3. In the PDFs in the repository section, select the Use Snapshot virtual printer option.
  3. Optional: If you want searchable text, configure Laserfiche to OCR existing page images for PDF files:
    1. In the Laserfiche Client, from the Tools menu, click Options.
    2. In the Options dialog box, click Generate Text.
    3. Click Advanced Settings for PDFs.
    4. Select the Use an alternative method to generate text (advanced) option.
    5. Select the OCR existing pages option.
  4. Import your XFA form into Laserfiche. On the Import to Laserfiche dialog box, clear the Generate Laserfiche pages check box.
  5. Browse to the newly imported XFA form. Right-click on the document and click Generate Pages.
  6. Right-click on the document and click Generate Searchable Text.

Notes:

  • Configuring Laserfiche in the above manner affects all PDF files. Undo the above changes in order to use the default PDF image and text generation method for non-dynamic XFA form PDF files.
  • Dynamic XFA PDFs are most commonly generated from Adobe LiveCycle.
