Summary

Thumbnails are used by Laserfiche clients to show a reduced-size version of pages, often to help users with file recognition and organization. Thumbnail files (which have an .lft extension) are created at the time they are needed for the first time (e.g., when a document is opened in the Laserfiche Client and the Thumbnails Pane is visible). By default, thumbnail files are stored in the document's volume. If, however, the volume is set to read-only, thumbnail files cannot be stored in the volume, and will instead be stored in memory on the Client's machine. To increase the speed at which thumbnails can be displayed, we recommend storing thumbnail files in the volume.

Resolution

To store thumbnail files in a volume, ensure the volume is not flagged as read-only:

  1. Open the Laserfiche Administration Console and log in to a repository as a user with the Manage Volume privilege.
  2. Expand the repository, then expand the Volumes node.
  3. Right-click a physical volume and select Properties.

Tip: Physical volumes display gold discs in their icon, while logical volumes do not. Setting properties on a logical volume will not affect any of its existing physical volumes, but will only affect its future physical volumes.

  4. In the volume's properties dialog box, in the General tab, ensure Read-only volume is NOT selected.

Note: If this check box is disabled, ensure the volume is not compressed and/or encrypted, which may result in the volume being read-only.

Tip: If you plan on burning volumes to CD or DVD, or other read-only media, ensure thumbnails have been generated for all of the relevant pages.
