Laserfiche Scanning 8 May Create Color Image Files With Larger Than Expected File Sizes.

April 5, 2010 | KB: 1012570
Laserfiche 8.1.2, Scanning 8.1.2

Summary

By default, Laserfiche Scanning creates image files using a lossless compression algorithm (LZW) in order to retain image quality. This can result in larger than expected file sizes when scanning color images. Laserfiche 8.1.2 introduces a trustee attribute to switch compression methods.

More Information

Add the following trustee attribute to the Everyone group to change the compression method used by Laserfiche Scanning to create color images:

[OPTIONS]DefaultColorFormatSNBD

To add the [OPTIONS]DefaultColorFormatSNBD trustee attribute using the Laserfiche 8 Administration Console

  1. Load the Laserfiche 8 Administration Console and log in to the desired Laserfiche repository.
  2. Expand the Users and Groups node and select the Everyone node.
  3. Right-click on the Everyone item in the properties pane and click Properties.
  4. In the Properties dialog box for the Everyone account, click the Attributes tab.
  5. Click the Add button to load the Add Attribute dialog box.
  6. Specify the following value in the Name field:
  7. [OPTIONS]DefaultColorFormatSNBD

Note: Attribute names are case sensitive.

  8. Specify the following value in the Data field:
  9. 13

  10. Click OK to close the Add Attribute dialog box.
  11. Click OK on the Everyone Properties dialog box to save your change.

Setting the trustee attribute value to 13 configures Laserfiche Scanning to use JPEG compression for color images. Any other value resets Laserfiche Scanning to using LZW compression for color images.

The attribute only affects Laserfiche Scanning when using a scanner and creating new image files. The attribute does not affect the Universal Capture scan engine.

While the above steps use the Everyone group, you can also set the attribute on a specific user account. The attribute value for a specific user will override the value set on a group.
