Audit Trail 8

Summary

When installing Laserfiche Audit Trail, you may receive the following error message:

    Error

Service 'Laserfiche Audit Trail Reporting Service 8.0' (LFAUDIT) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.

Cause

During the final stages of the installation process, the installer attempts to automatically start the Laserfiche Audit Trail Reporting Service. In certain situations, the service startup may take longer than expected and encounters the Windows Service Control Manager's timeout limit. The Service Control Manager aborts the action, thus preventing the installation process from finishing successfully.

Resolution

Modify the registry to increase the timeout limit for the Windows Service Control Manager.

Important: This article contains information about modifying the registry. Before you modify the registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that you understand how to restore the registry if a problem occurs.

To increase the Service Control Manager's timeout limit

  1. Click Start and then click Run.
  2. In the Run dialog box, type the following and click OK to load the Windows Registry Editor:

    regedit

  3. Expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
  4. Expand SYSTEM.
  5. Expand CurrentControlSet.
  6. Select the Control key.
  7. From the Edit menu, point to New and click DWORD Value.
  8. Name the new value:

    ServicesPipeTimeout

  9. Double-click the ServicesPipeTimeout value you created in the previous step.
  10. Set the value to the desired timeout limit in milliseconds. For example, if you want to set the timeout limit to 15 minutes, specify 900000. By default, the dialog box defaults to Hexadecimal. Select the Decimal option or be sure to convert the desired millisecond value into hexadecimal.
  11. Click OK to save your changes.

After changing the ServicesPipeTimeout registry value, restart the computer and rerun the Audit Trail installation.
