Installing Snapshot 8 and higher as a Shared Printer on Windows Server Operating Systems.

Snapshot

Summary

When you install Laserfiche Snapshot 8 and higher on a Windows Server operating system (such as Windows Server 2003), only terminal server drivers will be installed by default. Terminal server drivers only allow you to print to Snapshot from the terminal server itself and its terminal workstations. If you wish to share the printer with other workstations (such as Windows XP or Vista workstations), you will need to install Snapshot 8 with non-terminal server drivers.

Resolution (Snapshot 8.2 and higher)

By default, Laserfiche Snapshot 8.2 and higher is installed as a local printer. If you want Snapshot to be available as a shared printer to other computers on the network, you must choose the Custom setup type during the installation process and select the Snapshot Shared Printer subfeature. Installing Snapshot as a shared printer will prevent Snapshot from being available locally on the computer where it is installed.

You must uninstall and reinstall Snapshot to change between the local version and shared printer version of Snapshot 8.2 and higher.

Resolution (Snapshot 8.0 and Snapshot 8.1)

To allow Snapshot 8.0 or 8.1 to be shared with Windows XP or Vista workstations, you need to manually run the installation and specify that non-terminal server drivers should be used. Please note that in this case, the shared printer will only print from the workstations, not from the Server 2003 comptuer in which it is installed.

To manually install Snapshot with terminal service drivers, type the following command at a command prompt:

"Path\setup.exe" /v"FORCENT=1"

where Path is the path to the installation package.

Note: This will install Snapshot such that it can be used as a shared printer from Windows XP or Vista workstations. Snapshot will not be able to print locally on the computer on which it is install, or on terminal workstations. If you attempt to print locally, you will receive the error, "This driver does not work with Terminal Services enabled."

More Information

When you install Snapshot 8 and higher on a terminal server operating system, such as Windows Server 2003 or other servers which have been configured as terminal servers), the Snapshot installation only installs terminal server drivers by default. These drivers only allow you to print from the terminal server itself or any of its terminal workstations. You cannot share the printer to other computers. Non-terminal server drivers, by contrast, allows you to share and print from remote machines that are neither the terminal server nor one of its workstations.

If you have installed Snapshot onto a non-terminal server operating system (such as the default configurations of Windows XP or Vista), or you have installed Snapshot on a terminal server and will only be printing from that server or its workstations, you do not need to perform this manual installation. However, if you would like to install Snapshot on a terminal server but use it as a shared printer, this manual installation is necessary in order to install the proper drivers to use the printer as a shared printer.
