The following list highlights some of the major new features and changes in Laserfiche 8.0.0.
New Features for version 8.0.0
Product | New Feature |
Audit Trail | Audit reporting now features a Web-based interface. |
Audit Trail | Audit data is now stored in binary log files, instead of the main Laserfiche database. |
Audit Trail | The reporting interface expands the options for filtering and refining audit reports. |
Client | The Laserfiche Client now supports logging in to multiple Laserfiche repositories in the same Client window. |
Client | Use the Document Viewer to add new types of annotations on an image (e.g. rectangles, lines, freehand drawing). |
Client | The redesigned Options dialog box provides a cleaner method for browsing through available options without the need to open and close multiple dialog boxes. |
Client | By default, there is now a navigation toolbar. Use the navigation toolbar to specify a specific path and quickly browse to the specified folder. |
Client | The File menu now lists recently opened documents. |
Client | The Client now utilizes a customizable toolbar system modeled after the Microsoft Office 2003 toolbar customization system. |
Client | There is now a Quick Search toolbar to quickly perform text-based searches. |
Scanning | Default settings in Laserfiche Scanning can now be different than default settings in the Laserfiche Client. For example, you may wish to use a different default naming convention when scanning versus importing through the Client. You can configure Laserfiche Scanning to use a different default document name, default template, and default volume. |
Scanning | There is now a thumbnail view for scanned documents. |
Scanning | User preferences are now stored as user attributes on the Laserfiche Server. Personal settings do not have to be reconfigured when moving to a different scan station. |
Server | HTTP is now the basis for client/server communication in Laserfiche 8.0 using LFSO 8. Laserfiche Server 8.0 still supports legacy communications protocols (DCOM when using LFSO 7 and Sockets when using LFAPI) for backwards compatibility with previous client applications. By default, Laserfiche Server listens on port 80 (5050 when installed on the 32-bit edition of Windows XP). |
Server | Laserfiche 8 now supports a Recycle Bin feature. If the feature is enabled, deleted entries are automatically placed in the Recycle Bin. Non-administrator users can view the Recycle Bin to see only those entries that they deleted. Administrators will be able to see all deleted items in the Recycle Bin. The Recycle Bin can be configured to periodically empty out items that have exceeded a certain time limit. |
Server | You can now assign Laserfiche security items directly on Windows domain accounts without the need to directly link a Windows domain account with a Laserfiche user/group account. |
Server | Laserfiche now stores a history that tracks changes to sticky note text. |
Server | Annotations can now be marked as being protected. A protected annotation can only be modified or deleted by the creator of the annotation. |
Server |
Laserfiche 8 now supports new annotation types:
|
Server | You can now create fields separate from templates. One field can be associated with multiple templates. You can also assign fields to documents and folders without assigning a template to the document or folder. A field can now have multiple values assigned to it. In addition, Laserfiche 8 now includes the following new field types: time, number, and binary blob. |
Server | You can now set security directly on a template. |
Server | There are now entry access rights that control page deletion, page creation, and page movement. |
Server | Laserfiche can now maintain an activity log that records entry-specific operations. The activity log is separate from auditing. |
Server | Laserfiche Server 8 can send out notifications when changes are made to a document or folder. |
Server | The search engine now runs as a separate service from the Laserfiche Server. The new search engine is Unicode compliant and supports multi-lingual search. |
Server | You can now directly create copies of folders. |
Server | Laserfiche 8 does not create the following log files: LFS.log, lfstartup.txt, error.log. Errors and information messages are now logged in the Windows event log (viewable from the Windows Event Viewer). The tracing system now uses the Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) interface. You can use the ViewLfETL.exe utility to view saved trace files. |
Server | You can now create WMI scripts to list, create, delete, and attach repositories to your Laserfiche Server through the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) interface. |
Server | Laserfiche Server 8 now fully supports Unicode |
Snapshot | Snapshot now supports the 32-bit edition of Windows Vista and the 64-bit editions of Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Vista. |
Snapshot | When configuring the default volume for new documents created through Snapshot, you can use either the default volume as set in the Laserfiche Client's Options dialog box, or the default volume as set on the parent folder where Snapshot is creating the new document. The options are called <Use client's default volume> and <Use parent folder's default volume>, respectively. (37456) |
Key differences from Laserfiche 7
Product | Change |
Records Management | Laserfiche 7 reports record series as having a current location of "Current filing system." Laserfiche 8 no longer reports record series as having a location. (32996) |
Records Management | Retention schedules and cutoff instructions set on a parent record series no longer always inherit to child record series and child record folders. When you create a record series or record folder under a record series with a set retention schedule or cutoff instruction, the parent retention schedule and cutoff instruction are explicitly set on the newly created record series or record folder. Changing the retention schedule and cutoff instruction on a parent record series will only affect newly created child items. (31384) |
Records Management | The path of a record series no longer includes the series code. (31848) |
Records Management | The "permanent record" option is no longer a property of a retention schedule. You now specify "permanent record" status directly on a record folder. (31664) |
Laserfiche Administration Console | When a user with the Manage Trustees privilege attempts to modify the password of a user account from the Laserfiche 8 Administration Console, they will not be prompted for the old password. This includes changing the password on their own account. (30202) |
Server | The Create Shortcut and Delete Shortcut entry access rights no longer exist. |
Server | The Freeze and Unfreeze entry access rights have been combined into one entry access right: the Freeze/Unfreeze entry access right. |
Server | The Access Control entry access right has been split into two separate entry access rights: the Read Entry Security and Write Entry Security entry access rights. |
Server | Repository names cannot contain spaces. (35626) |
Server | Renaming a document no longer changes the “last modified” date of the document. Instead, it changes the “last modified” date of the parent folder. (29529) |
Server | Failed attempts to log in using an invalid user name are no longer audited. (27658) |
Server | Client applications can no longer specify that they wish to use a read-only connection. Laserfiche administrators can use the "Only allow read-only access" option to configure whether specific user accounts only have read-only access to the repository. (34109) |
Server | The "Everyone" group is no longer granted all entry access rights on the root folder of a newly created repository. (29215) |
Server | Laserfiche now supports SQL Server instances with case-sensitive collation types. |
Server | SQL Triggers are no longer supported as valid types of integrations. Laserfiche Server 8 caches data and adding custom triggers to the SQL tables associated with Laserfiche can cause issues. |
Server | Thumbnails no longer display redactions. (30079) |
Server | Thumbnail and word location data is no longer stored in the SQL database. They are now stored in the volume along with the image and text data. |
Server | A text search for * by itself no longer returns all documents in a repository. It now returns 0 entries. (29644) |
