This article lists general areas of compatibility issues as well as a listing of
specific issues when using Laserfiche 6 or Laserfiche 7 client programs to connect
to a Laserfiche 8 Server.
Laserfiche Server 8.0 is compatible with the following legacy Laserfiche products.
Compatibility does not mean full support for new features available in Laserfiche
Server 8.0. Legacy clients are unaware of new functionality.

Laserfiche 7 client programs
You will encounter compatibility issues when using Laserfiche 7 client programs
to access the following
areas of a Laserfiche 8 repository.
- Access rights and privileges
- Auditing
- Creating a repository
- Annotations
- Locking
See the following list of specific issues:
- You may receive an "[800] error" if your search result browser is configured to display a date type field and the search result includes a document with a date type independent field. (39847)
- A repository name with more than 46 characters may not automatically display in the list of available repositories on the Laserfiche Client 7 Start Page. You may need to click Attach and attach the repository. The repository will attach correctly and you will be able to log in to the repository. However, the Start Page may display the Laserfiche Server's name appended to the end of the repository name.
- Users with the Create Templates and Fields privilege cannot add
a new template to repository during briefcase import. (37140)
- Protected annotations appear to be editable even if you are not the document
owner or the creator of the protected annotation. However, attempting to save changes
will return an "Access denied" message. You will not be able to save any other changes
you have made to the document until you undo your changes to the protected annotation.

- Attempting to modify the text of a document stored on a permanent volume will return an "Error opening/creating a document page
part volume file." error. (36267)
- The New Page menu item remains disabled in Laserfiche Client 7 if you are granted
the Append Data entry access right. Laserfiche
Client 7 expects you to have the Modify Contents right. This means
that in order to add a new page through Laserfiche Client 7, you must have both
Append Data and Modify Contents. Only Append
Data is needed when using Laserfiche Client 8. (36265)
- When viewing entry access rights through Laserfiche Client 7, the Modify
Contents is mapped to two separate Laserfiche 8 entry access rights. It
can mean that you have either the Delete Document Pages right or
the Modify Contents right or both. (35948)
- If you attempt to modify entry access rights from Laserfiche Client 7, you must
have the Read entry access right on the entry you wish to modify.

- The "use a read-only connection" check box on the Laserfiche Client 7 Start Page
will not create a read-only connection. (35685)
- You may receive "permission denied" errors after adding a text page to a document and switching pages when you only have the Read and Append Data volume access rights. (35844)
- You cannot set entry access rights directly on Windows accounts through Laserfiche
Client 7. You are able to view effective rights. (35347)
- Windows accounts configured to "Inherit authentication rights from group membership"
will not be displayed in the Laserfiche 7 Administration Console's Windows Accounts
node. (35337)
- The Create Shortcuts and Delete Shortcuts entry
access rights no longer exist. However, when viewing effective rights through Laserfiche
Client 7, the dialog will display you as having those rights. (35251)
- The Laserfiche 7 Administration Console will not display the correct effective rights
for a trustee if you take advantage of the new groups within groups functionality
of Laserfiche 8. (35216)
- Laserfiche Client 7 may not correctly handle the new token format. (35105)
- Laserfiche Client 7 is not directly aware of the Laserfiche 8 Recycle Bin. However, if the Recycle Bin is enabled, deleting an entry using Laserfiche Client 7 still correctly moves the entry to the Recycle Bin. (34923)
- You cannot use Laserfiche Client 7 to independently assign either the Freeze entry access right or the Unfreeze entry access right. Due to the consolidation of Freeze and Unfreeze into one entry access right in Laserfiche 8, you must set both rights. (34815)
- If you have the Read Entry Access entry access right on an entry, it may appear that you can modify entry access rights from Laserfiche Client 7. However, if you do not also have the Write Entry Access right, you will receive a "Permission denied" error. (34814)
- Number, Time, and Data fields are displayed as Char fields when using the Laserfiche 7 Administration Console. (34013)
- You are not restricted from typing in non-number characters into a Number field. However, you will receive a "One or more template field values supplied are invalid" error if you attempt to save your change. (29640)
Laserfiche 6 client programs
You will be able to perform most basic functions such as basic importing, modifying entries, and performing searches.
See the following list of specific issues:
- Laserfiche Client 6 will only display the first 31 fields in a template.
- Laserfiche Client 6 will not display assigned independent fields.
- Laserfiche Client 6 will only display the first 65535 pages of a document.
- Laserfiche Client 6 will only display the first 32767 characters of text in a document.
