Summary
If you upgrade from a version of the Laserfiche Client, Import Agent, Snapshot or Toolkit that uses the IRIS OCR engine to a version that uses the OmniPage® OCR engine, you can choose to continue to use the IRIS OCR engine as a supplement to the OmniPage engine. To do so, use the Legacy OCR Adapter.
More Information
It is not necessary to use the Legacy OCR Adapter unless you wish to continue to use IRIS OCR. For most installations, it is not necessary to use the Legacy OCR Adapter, as OmniPage OCR is more accurate and flexible than IRIS OCR. However, in some situations, you might want to retain IRIS OCR. Different OCR engines use different algorithms to read text from images, and so each one has distinctive results. Some organizations with large repositories that have been OCRed using IRIS may want to keep the IRIS engine so that their new documents will be consistent with their old ones. Others might want to keep IRIS as an option because they prefer the way IRIS OCRs a particular document type.
The Legacy OCR Adapter will allow you to continue to use IRIS OCR with the Laserfiche Client, Snapshot, Import Agent and Toolkit. For more information on OmniPage OCR, and for information about using IRIS OCR with Laserfiche Scanning, Web Access Scanning, and Quick Fields, see Upgrading to the OmniPage OCR Engine.
Resolution
First, you will need to install the Legacy OCR Adapter. This should be done before you upgrade to a version of Laserfiche which uses the OmniPage engine. If you have already upgraded, you will be prompted to locate an installation package for a version of Laserfiche which uses the IRIS engine.
Note: The Legacy OCR Adapter requires either an installed version of Laserfiche that uses IRIS, or an installation package for a version of Laserfiche that uses IRIS. If you do not have either -- for instance, if you are performing a fresh installation of Laserfiche -- you will not be able to use the Legacy OCR Adapter.
To install the Legacy OCR Adapter
Important: If you install the Legacy OCR Adapter when the Laserfiche Client is not installed, and later install the Client, you will need to re-run the Legacy OCR Adapter installation in Repair mode. To do so, run the installation by double-clicking the setup.exe file. When prompted to repair or remove your installation, select Repair.
To install the Legacy OCR Adapter in silent mode
The Laserfiche Legacy OCR Adapter can be installed in silent mode using the following syntax in a batch file or by typing it in the command-line prompt:
Note: The OCRSOURCELOCATION= \"ClientInstallPath\Client\"" section of the command is only necessary if a version of Laserfiche using IRIS OCR is not installed. If such a version is installed, the silent install does not need a client install path.
AdapterInstallPath represents the path to the Laserfiche Legacy OCR installation package. ClientInstallPath represents the path to the Laserfiche Client installation package. The following line demonstrates an example of how to launch the Legacy OCR Adapter in silent mode:
To use IRIS OCR in the Laserfiche Client
Note: Modifying this setting will configure the OCR engine for OCR processes performed within the Laserfiche Client. To configure the OCR engine for documents added to the repository using the Send to Laserfiche command from Microsoft Windows, please see "To use IRIS OCR in Import Agent, Send to Laserfiche, Snapshot and Toolkit," below.
Note: To switch back to OmniPage OCR, return to the OCR Options dialog and select OmniPage OCR.
To use IRIS OCR in Import Agent, Send to Laserfiche, Snapshot and Toolkit
Note: Import Agent, Snapshot and Toolkit read from the same registry key to determine whether they should use the IRIS engine or the OmniPage engine. Therefore, it is not possible to configure the three products to use different OCR engines.
Note: To switch back to OmniPage OCR, repeat this process with the "Use OmniPage OCR Engine.reg" file. If the Legacy OCR Adapter is uninstalled, these products will automatically rever to using the OmniPage OCR engine.
