Web Access 7

Summary

When installing Web Access on a computer with Windows Server 2003, you may receive the following error message:

The install cannot add the printer, because the "Disallow installation of printers using kernel-mode driver" group policy is enabled on this system.

Resolution

Disable the Disallow installation of printers using kernel-mode driver group policy and then install Web Access.

Warning: Incorrectly editing the registry may adversely affect your system. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs.

To disable this group policy

  1. Click Start and then click Run.
  2. In the Run dialog box, type the following and then click OK.

    gpedit.msc

  3. In the Microsoft Management Console that opens up, select the Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Printers item.
  4. Select the Disallow installation of printers using kernel-mode drivers policy.
  5. From the Action menu, click Properties.
  6. In the Settings tab, select the Disabled option.
  7. Click OK to save the change and close the dialog box.

Note: The group policy can be enabled again once the installation completes.

More Information

In certain situations, you may continue to receive this error even after disabling the group policy. This may be because the computer used to be part of a domain that is no longer available. Delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\DomainCache registry key.
