Summary
Laserfiche uses word location information to associate words in the text of a document with the location of the words on the document's image files.
More Information
The Laserfiche client generates word location information for a document when that document is OCRed. As the words on the image are processed and generated as text, their locations on the image are also recorded in the database.
This word location information is used to associate words in the text with words on the image. Laserfiche associates words in the text with words on the image to accurately display search result highlighting on the document's image by linking text located by a search to the text's corresponding location on the image and highlighting that location. Similarly, a highlight or redaction created on the text of a document can be linked to the image of the document, thus applying the same highlight or redaction to the portion of the image that corresponds to the highlighted or redacted text. However, highlights and redactions applied to the image cannot be linked to the text.
If the text or image portions of a document is changed after the OCR process, and the document is not re-OCRed, the word location information may be incorrect. Adding or removing word delimiters can also affect word location data. This can result in search result highlights that highlight the wrong word, or incorrectly applied linked highlights or redactions.
Laserfiche installations using Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Edition (MSDE) or Personal Edition store word location information in the expansion databases. This can result in errors while OCRing or applying linked text annotations if the expansion databases are not attached.
