Volume Rollover Occurs Before The Current Physical Volume Reaches the Default Size Limit.

Summary

Volume rollover occurs before the current physical volume reaches the default size limit.

Cause

A logical volume provides the means through which multiple physical volumes can be represented as a single volume. The size limit assigned to a logical volume determines the default size limit for the physical volumes created from it. Importing to the logical volume when a physical volume is full will cause a new physical volume to be created. In Laserfiche Server 7.0.x, volume rollover may occur before the size limit is reached, leaving physical volumes that are smaller in size than the specified size limit.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in Laserfiche Server 7.1. Logical volumes created with this version and later versions will roll over at the correct size. Furthermore, new physical volumes within an existing logical volume will roll over at the correct size.

However, upgrading to Laserfiche Server 7.1 cannot alter physical volumes that have already been created. Therefore, volumes that rolled over before reaching their maximum size will still be smaller than desired. It is possible to create a new logical volume and migrate the existing documents into the new logical volume. The new logical volume will correctly use the defined volume size limit and create physical volumes that are the desired size.

To migrate documents from one volume to another volume

  1. Open the Laserfiche Administration Console.
  2. Expand Repositories.
  3. Expand your repository.
  4. Expand Volumes.
  5. From the Action menu, select New Volume.
  6. In the New Volume dialog, specify a new volume name and path.
  7. Specify the volume's maximum size and select Automatically create a new volume when size limit is reached.
  8. Click OK to create the new logical volume.
  9. Open the Laserfiche Client.
  10. Open a search window.
  11. Click Customize Search and select Within Volume.
  12. Select the name of the volume you wish to migrate documents from and click the Search button.

Note: You should search on the logical rather than physical volume name. If you are migrating documents from a rollover volume named Volume, you should search for documents within Volume, not within Volume1, Volume2 and so on. This will ensure that all documents stored in rollover volumes are correctly migrated.

  13. Select all the documents in the search results pane.
  14. From the Action menu, select Migrate Document(s)... to load the Migrate Entries dialog box.
  15. In the Destination volume option, select the volume you created in step 8.
  16. Click OK.

Optionally, after the migration finishes, you can delete the old volume and rename the new volume to the same name as the old volume. If you choose to do this, you will need to rename all of the individual physical volumes in the new logical volume.

Note: This procedure is only necessary on volumes created before the upgrade to 7.1.x. Volumes created in Laserfiche 7.1.x will roll over properly.
