The following list provides a brief introduction to the new features that have been integrated into Laserfiche 7.
- A new auditing system has been introduced. This new auditing system is integrated directly into Laserfiche and is managed through the Administration Console.
- A new search interface has been introduced. This new search interface provides more functionality and customization abilities than the version 6 search interface.
- A new method of authentication has been introduced. Directory Integration allows "user-less" login. Trusted domain accounts can be assigned to Laserfiche groups, allowing users to
log into Laserfiche without a Laserfiche user account.
- A new Records Management interface has been introduced.
- A new administration console has been introduced. This new administration console is more versatile than the version 6 administration console. In addition to functions that were
available in the Laserfiche 6 administration console (connections, index, settings), the new administration console includes user, template, volume, and tag management. Because of the
new console, those respective functions have been removed from the Client user interface.
- Template access control security has been introduced. An administrator can determine which users and groups will be allowed to perform privileged actions on a field.
- The Laserfiche Repository Migration wizard has been introduced. This wizard allows you to migrate a Laserfiche repository from version 6 to version 7. The supported platforms to
which
a repository can be migrated are SQL Server and Oracle.
- A new scanning interface has been introduced. This scanning interface provides increased functionality while retaining usability. Scanning from Laserfiche opens a new window from
which you can immediately scan. You can also customize how your images will be scanned and processed. This new scanning interface provides improved color scanning support and the ability
to remove blank pages from your scanned documents. Additionally, you are allowed to use tokens when specifying the Laserfiche folder in which your scanned documents will be stored.
This allows you to quickly organize your scanned documents into Laserfiche folders.
- Tags have been introduced. Tags are a means through which documents can be categorized. There are two basic types of Tags, which are Informational and Security. Informational tags
just provide additional information about the document. Users can use this tag to find a particular type of document. When used as a security measure, only users that have been granted
all of the security tags assigned to a document or folder will be allowed to view its contents.
- We now offer improved Windows and Office integration. Improved Windows integration means that you may now send any file from Windows Explorer to a Laserfiche repository through the
Send To menu. Office integration involves sending a document from a Microsoft Office application to a Laserfiche repository. Additionally, sending an e-mail message from Microsoft Outlook
to Laserfiche provides additional options that allow you to determine what happens to attachments, the distribution list, and e-mail property information.
- Multiple instances of the Laserfiche Client application can now be opened at the same time.
- New instances of the Folder Browser and Document view are opened in independent windows. All of the windows that have been opened from an instance of the Laserfiche Client application
are listed under the Windows menu. Closing a window will not have an effect on any other window. However, exiting the Laserfiche repository will close all windows that were opened by
the current instance of the Laserfiche Client application.
- The Folder Browser window now has multiple views (Large icons, Small icons, List, and Details) for the contents of a directory.
- The columns that appear in the Details view for the Folder Browser and Search window can be rearranged. Additionally, field columns can now be individually hidden or displayed.
- The current Folder Browser and Search Result contents can now be printed. The print job will accurately reflect the Details pane.
- The current Folder Browser contents can now be exported as a delimited text file. This text file will list each item residing in the current folder along with additional property
information. The type of additional information that will be included can be customized by configuring the columns that will appear in the Details view.
- All export options are now located in a centralized location, which is the Export Options dialog box. The following new export features have been introduced:
- Images from a standard document can now be exported as a multi-page TIFF image or in PDF format. PDFs generated from Laserfiche documents support the search functionality provided
by Adobe.
- Authorized users can now choose whether redactions will be included in exported files.
- A file naming convention can now be specified, which will be used when exporting multiple images or text files.
- The character that will be used to redact can now be specified.
- The text associated with each page can now be exported as separate text files.
- Text can now be exported with page breaks.
- Briefcases can now be limited to the currently opened folder.
- Laserfiche documents can now be copied. In previous versions, only shortcuts to documents could be created.
- Standard edit commands have been introduced, which provide a standard means for copying and moving items.
- A ghosted image will now appear for items being dragged and dropped.
- A relationship can now be established between two documents. This is known as Document Linking.
- Multiple versions of a document can be stored. This is known as Document Versioning.
- You can now configure which types of files will be converted to images within a standard document when they are imported into a Laserfiche repository.
- Laserfiche can now be configured to prompt for field data whenever a file is imported into a repository.
- Drag and drop support for importing emails from Microsoft Outlook. Emails can now be assigned default field data. Attachments can be stored along with the email or they can be stored
as separate electronic documents.
- This version of Laserfiche introduces a more powerful and flexible security scheme. Laserfiche security can now explicitly deny users and groups certain rights to a document or folder.
Additionally, you can determine the scope for a set of access rights. Finally, many new access rights have been added.
- Laserfiche security has been enhanced with the following privileges:
- Manage Trustees
- Manage Volumes
- Manage Metadata
- Manage Entry Access
- Records Management
- Manage Connections
- View Audit Records
- Manage Audit Settings
- Configure Search/Index
- Set Trustee Privileges
- Manage Repository Configuration
- Searching can now be performed from the Search pane in the Folder Browser window.
- This version of Laserfiche introduces many different search types. Some of the more notable new search types are volume, sticky note, creation date, and modification date searches.
- After performing a search, the Folder Browser will display a Search Results item. Selecting the Search Results tree item will display the results for the previously performed search.
Additionally,
the search can be performed again by pressing F5.
- After performing a search, you may now open the folder containing a particular search result.
- Templates have been updated to support the following:
- Required or mandatory fields.
- Default values for any type of field.
- Two new field types: List and Date Time.
- The maximum number of fields that can be assigned to a template has been increased to 999 fields.
- The maximum width (or number of characters) for a field has been increased to 4000.
- Security can now be configured on a field-by-field basis. The following rights can be granted or denied to users and groups: Read, Edit, and Create.
- A template can now be assigned to a folder.
- The Document window can now display an image, text, field data, and thumbnails at the same time. Each component can be independently hidden or displayed. Additionally, the layout
can be rearranged and the panes can be resized. Finally, each component can be undocked and become a separate window. The window for an undocked component can be minimized, maximized,
resized, and closed.
- Changes made within a document can be automatically saved by setting an option.
- The Image pane within the Document window now supports the use of a mouse's scroll wheel to zoom in and out of the image.
- Two new tools have been added to the Image pane within the Document window. These tools are Zoom and Pan modes. Switching to Zoom mode changes the cursor to a zoom icon. The user
can then zoom in and out of an image by clicking or pressing CTRL and clicking on the image. Switching to Pan mode changes the cursor to a hand cursor. The image can then be scrolled
by dragging the image to display the desired portion of the image.
- Images can now be viewed in a reading-style mode. This mode allows you to scroll between pages in the same document. Scrolling an image beyond the top of the page will display the
bottom of the previous page, while scrolling an image beyond the bottom of the page will display the top of the next page. This page scrolling feature can be configured from the View
Options dialog box.
- Hovering over a sticky note will now display its contents in a tooltip.
- Annotation tools will now persist after the annotation is applied to the image or text. This allows the image and/or text to be quickly annotated multiple times.
- Improved Color dialog box for highlights and stamps.
- Stamps can now be rotated.
- Text can now be edited and annotated from within the Text pane in the Document window.
- Multiple levels of undo/redo during a single text modification session. Additionally, all text changes within a single text modification session can be canceled.
- Text annotations can now create an annotation on the corresponding portion of an image at any time. The image and text annotation will be linked. Previously, this behavior could
only occur when creating the text annotation.
- Laserfiche provides the option to include annotations when printing documents. Selecting this option will now also include sticky notes.
- When printing documents that contain redactions, you may now choose to print transparent redactions.
- There are now two types of volumes: Physical and Logical. Physical volumes are the type of volumes that existed in previous versions of Laserfiche. Logical volumes allow for a set
of
physical volumes to be recognized by a common name. When importing, standard users will only be allowed to select the logical volume and not the physical volumes associated with it.
When the physical volume currently being used by the logical volume reaches the maximum size, the current physical volume will be closed and a new physical volume will be created. All
new data will now be created in the new physical volume.
- A Laserfiche repository can now support up to 32,767 volumes. This limitation is measured by the creation of volumes over the lifetime of the repository. In other words, once 32,767
volumes have been created, you will not be allowed to create additional volumes in that repository, even if you try detaching or deleting volumes.
- The maximum number of characters for the name of a document, electronic document, or shortcut has been increased to 255.
- A Laserfiche repository can now support up to 2,147,483,648 pages.
- Data deletion is now performed using a more secure method. Upon the deletion of a Laserfiche document, image, text, and electronic files can be wiped before they are deleted from
the system. This will prevent unauthorized data recovery from your hard drive.
