Cookies are Not Set on Certain Workstations.

December 30, 2004 | KB: 1000628
Web Access 6, WebLink 6,Web Access 7, WebLink 7

Summary

Certain versions of Internet Explorer prevent servers with unsupported names from setting cookie information. This issue has two possible consequences depending on how you have configured Web Access and/or WebLink. Each possible consequence is described below.

  • Automatic login: If users are automatically logged on to a Laserfiche repository, then a licensed connection will be used on the Laserfiche Server whenever information is requested from it. This will quickly drain the number of available licensed connections.
  • Manual login: If users are required to provide authentication information, then they will be allowed to log on to the repository. However, they will not be able to see the content of the repository. Instead, the Login page will be displayed again.

Cause

This issue can occur if the URL used by Web Access or WebLink contains a character that is not alphanumeric. In such a case, certain versions of Internet Explorer will not store cookies. In turn, this will prevent it from keeping track of your Laserfiche session. An example of an invalid URL is: http://My_Server/weblink.

Resolution

Make sure that the name of your web server and the virtual directory used by Web Access or WebLink only contains alphanumeric characters. This includes hyphens ("-") and periods (".").

More Information

The security patch MS01-055 for Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or 6.0 introduced changes to how it handles cookie requests from servers with improper names. As a result, cookies requested by such servers will not be set on the client. For more information on this issue, please refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
